Myofascial release (MFR) is derived from the Latin ‘muscle band’:
Myo – Muscle
Fascia – The body’s main connective tissue
Release – To adapt and ease pressure
MFR is a high effective treatment approach; the techniques are applied slowly to the body, to facilitate the gentle sustained pressure and stretch.
MFR techniques encourage the freedom of movement within the tissues, assisting the body to restore alignment and mobility to the muscles and joints.
It is a specialised soft tissue technique that works locally within the fascial network, but also through its neural connections it can work more with the central nervous system.
As the essence of MFR is gentle and slow, the physical and emotional aspect of an injury can be addressed in a safe and gentle way. Everyone can benefit from MFR regardless of their age, fitness and health.
Physiotherapists consider the body as a whole, rather than just focusing on the individual aspects of an injury or illness. Physiotherapy can be helpful for people of all ages with a wide range of health conditions, including problems affecting the bones, joints, soft tissue, brain or nervous system, heart and circulation, lungs and breathing.
Physiotherapists use a variety of techniques such as education and advice, tailored exercise and physical activity advice, manual therapy and other techniques to help relieve pain and stiffness and to encourage better movement of the body.
